Save the Arctic

23/10/2013

The Arctic ice is melting and if current trends continue, the Arctic Ocean is likely to see ice-free summers within the next decade.

The Arctic is one of our planet’s vital organs. If the world’s forests are the lungs of the Earth, the Arctic is its heart.

In the last 30 years, we’ve lost as much as 75% of the sea ice cover.

It’s melting because of the use of fossil fuel energy, and in the near future it could be ice free. This would be not only devastating for the people, polar bears, narwhals, walruses and other species that live there, but for the rest of us too.

The polar ice cap is stabilising the weather systems that we depend on to grow our food.

Protecting the ice means protecting us all.

One of the fundamental values of the company is the protection of the environment, that’s the reason why we would like to be the echo the following  greenpeace news:

Industrial fishing fleets are starting to trawl Arctic waters. If we let big fishing companies exploit the Arctic ocean, local people that have fished sustainably in the Arctic for thousands of years, would be threatened.

The Arctic 30 are facing two months behind bars in Russia for a peaceful protest against dangerous oil drilling.

On 18 September, they took action at the giant Prirazlomnaya oil rig, where Gazprom intends to become the first company to pump oil from Arctic waters.

On 19 September, the ship was illegally boarded by armed special forces.

The same companies, that caused the Arctic to melt, are looking to open up a new oil frontier to get at a potential 90 billion barrels of oil. This new arctic oil rush would devastate Arctic oil spill for only 3 years’ worth of oil.

To drill in the Arctic, oil companies have to drag icebergs out the way of their rigs and use giant hoses to melt floating ice with warm water. If we let them do this, a catastrophic oil spill is just a matter of time.

Each and every one of us is affected by the health of the Arctic.

Together we have something stronger than any company’s budget. Our shared concern for the planet we leave our children transcends.

Show your solidarity with the Arctic 30 and ask Russian embassy to immediately release all detainees.
