Jute is an ideal material for making shopping bags, and for several reasons: the raw material is environmentally friendly, it is a visually appealing material, and jute fibre can be harvested quickly. Jute comes from the Capilaris Corchorus tree and is cultivated in India or Bangladesh. This particularly resistant vegetable fibre is used to make carpets, upholstery, used in industry sector too.

Jute cultivation

Jute does not require chemical products to grow and its cultivation does not affect the ecosystem. The non-use of chemicals allows to keep low cost manufacturing. The great majority of Hessian comes from the Ganges delta, where the weather is always hot and humid. Jute can grow very rapidly, it can be harvested every six months and the tree on which it grows did not need to be cut.

Jute Weaving

When jute is harvested, it is cut into strips and woven by means of a loom. The fabrics are then sewn together for the manufacture of jute bags. The jute bags are usually beige color, but can be dyed according to customer choice. The fabric, initially rigid and rough, can also be adapted, therefore we will find different qualities of fabrics.

Uses of jute

The burlap bag was traditionally used to carry and store potatoes, cereals and sugar. Today, jute is being used in a more creative way, ideally suited to a variety of uses, ranging from: multipurpose bags, beach bags, bottle bags, shopping bags, supermarket reusable bags, packing, wrapping material, etc. Jute is used in composite materials for the automobile industry too.

Even if this fibre has been used for nearly a century as a material for making bags in North America and Europe, due to its low cost manufacturing and to its extreme resistance, it is only recently that the public has started to use jute as an environmentally friendly material for making bags and reusable packaging. 

Jute is the cheapest natural fibre and is the second most widely cultivated vegetable fibre after cotton. Jute contributes positively to the “universal” plastic bag pollution problem.
