Jute as a sustainable solution for concrete curing

Concrete has been the most widely used material in the construction industry since the early 20th century. Present in buildings, bridges, tunnels, ports, and civil works, its strength and versatility make it an essential component, even in structures whose main framework is steel.

To ensure its durability and strength, it is essential to properly carry out the curing process, which consists of maintaining the concrete at the appropriate temperature and humidity after pouring and finishing. In this way, its mechanical properties develop correctly and premature deterioration is prevented.

Jute: the ideal material for wet curing

One of the most effective and sustainable ways to carry out this process is by using jute fabric or burlap, which offers significant technical advantages:

  • High moisture retention capacity, essential for prolonged wet curing.

  • Natural resistance to rot, ensuring durability on site.

  • Fire-resistant behavior, improving safety in working environments.

  • Adaptability and reusability, compared to plastics or synthetic blankets.

Application method

The moist jute burlap should be placed immediately after surface finishing, once the concrete has hardened enough to prevent erosion of its outer layer. It must then be kept continuously moist through watering or spraying to ensure constant hydration.

This method allows for uniform curing, which directly results in greater strength, durability, and stability of the concrete, thereby reducing cracks, shrinkage, and structural failures.

Commitment to sustainable construction

The incorporation of natural fibers such as jute in construction processes represents a step forward toward more environmentally friendly practices. Compared to single-use plastic alternatives, jute fabric is biodegradable, recyclable, and renewable, making it a valuable resource for the present and future of the sector.

At Deyute, we work to ensure that construction and sustainability go hand in hand.

Jute not only takes care of concrete… it also takes care of the planet.
